The 2020-21 BIG EAST slate starts in Indianapolis on Wednesday afternoon
CHICAGO – DePaul men's soccer kicks off BIG EAST play with a matchup against the Butler Bulldogs in Indianapolis, Ind. on Wednesday at 2:00 pm CT. The Blue Demons (0-0-2) and Bulldogs (0-4-0) will square off at Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl on Butler's campus on Wednesday afternoon. A live stream will be available via the Butler Athletics YouTube page.
DePaul and Butler are matching up for the 12th time all-time and the Blue Demons will be looking for their third win in the series. The BIG EAST foes fought to a 2-2 draw on Oct. 12, 2019, the last time the squads met. Forward Jake Fuderer scored to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead early in the game and then-senior Max de Bruinje scored in the 89th minute to send the game to overtime.
DePaul enters the match with a pair of draws to its record after playing two official non-conference games to begin the season. The Blue Demons' scheduled matchup with Western Michigan last Friday was canceled due to COVID issues within the Western Michigan program.
DePaul's last appearance on the pitch resulted in a scoreless draw against Loyola in Rockford, Ill. on Sunday, Feb. 28. Senior goalkeeper Drew Nuelle made nine saves in the match and earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition after the performance that saw him make a pair of difficult stops in overtime to keep the contest scoreless. Meanwhile, DePaul battled to a 2-2 draw against Northern Illinois in the season-opener on Wednesday, Feb. 17 with Fuderer scoring both goals for the Blue Demons.
DePaul and Butler are searching for their first win of the season as the Bulldogs have suffered four defeats during non-conference play. The Bulldogs, who were picked atop the BIG EAST West Division in the conference Preseason Coaches Poll, have only scored one goal this season. However Butler has played in a number of close games, only being outscored by six total goals in their four losses this spring.
After the Blue Demons begin the conference slate on Wednesday, the squad will return to Lincoln Park to host the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday, March 6 at 1:00 pm CT at Wish Field.
