Blue Demons Drop BIG EAST Opener to Butler

INDIANAPOLIS – DePaul men's soccer suffered a 5-0 defeat against Butler in the BIG EAST opener on Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs, who were picked atop the BIG EAST West Division Preseason Poll, were led offensively by Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. who scored three goals in the Butler victory.
Cabrera, who was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year in 2019, struck 13 minutes into the match on a low shot that deflected into the net off the woodwork. DePaul was able to fire off eight first-half shots to Butler's five but the Bulldogs held a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
With the Bulldogs leading 1-0 throughout the first half, the Blue Demons were still able to generate opportunities offensively. However, the tone of the match switched after the intermission as Butler tallied goals in the 48th and 54th minutes to stretch the lead to a commanding 3-0 advantage. Cabrera, Jr. notched his third goal of the game in the 75th minute and the Bulldogs went on to secure a 5-0 win.
Jake Fuderer and Marek Gonda led the Blue Demons with three shots apiece.

DePaul returns to Lincoln Park to host the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday, March 6 at 1:00pm CT at Wish Field. Marquette got off to a 3-0-0 start this season before dropping their conference opener to the Creighton Bluejays, 1-2 on Feb. 20.
