Blue Demons move to 34-1 all-time against the Billikens
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Despite a game cancelation and an hour rain delay, DePaul pushed through adversity and came out on top over Saint Louis, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon.
Jessica Cothern's two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning gave DePaul the go-ahead run and Kate Polucha's solo-shot in the top of the seventh provided the insurance as the Blue Demons tallied nine hits on the day.
DePaul (5-4) wasted no time in getting the bats going in the first inning as Angela Scalzitti tallied a leadoff single through the right side before stealing second on the next pitch. Cothern singled to the right side to advance Scalzitti to third. Brooke Johnson reached on a Billikens fielding error to load the bases. Polucha struck into a fielder's choice to shortstop with Scalzitti and Cothern scoring on an throwing error. Tori Meyer tallied an RBI single up the middle to score Johnson and put DePaul up 3-0.
Saint Louis (0-3) tallied two runs in the bottom of the first off of a two-run homer to left field to bring the Billikens within one.
The Blue Demons loaded the bases in the third inning but couldn't put runs on the board as Grace Frazier was called out as she ran home on a Polucha fielder's choice.
The Billikens recorded an RBI double to center field in the bottom of the third to tie the score up at 3-3. In the fourth, Saint Louis sent a home run over the left field wall to take its first lead of the game at 4-3.
