Season-Opening Sweep for Men's Tennis

Blue Demons ace UIC 7-0 Friday night at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness
CHICAGO – There's nothing like a clean sweep to open up a brand-new tennis season.
Playing for keeps for the first time since March 8, 2020, the DePaul men's team defeated Illinois-Chicago 7-0 Friday night at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
A global pandemic forced the NCAA to close down all spring sports last year. The fall tournament season was also canceled because of COVID-19.
The Blue Demons began the evening securing the doubles point as the "Brothers Tonejc" Fran and Vito knocked off UIC's Pelle Strandberg/Luiz Dos Santos 6-3.
Luuk Wassenaar and Lars Peder Minsaas followed up with a 7-5 decision over Artem Iermolov/Casey Schrader 7-5.
Tripp Tuff put coach Matt Brothers' team up 2-0 with his 6-0, 6-1 victory over Schrader at No. 5 singles. Christopher Casati was next to score with a 6-2, 6-3 verdict over Gustavo Schwebel at No. 3.
No. 1 singles player Vito Tonejc clinched the match with his 6-1, 6-2 win over Strandberg. It was 5-0 after Tamas Zador outscored Dos Santos 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.
Fran Tonejc closed out the action with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Iermolov while Phasu "Sunny" Sirinit received a default win at No. 6 singles.
"It was such a great feeling to be back together and competing as a team," Brothers said. "I could not be more proud of the tremendous amount of work these guys have put in to be ready for this season and our first match in almost 11 months.
"Great start for us getting a dominant win."
The Band of Brothers is back in action Sunday with its first road match of the season at Western Michigan.
