Blue Demons Defeated in Home Opener

Matt Brickman notches first career goal
CHICAGO – Back at Wish Field for the first time since November 2019, the DePaul men's soccer team was defeated by Marquette, 3-1, after a pair of second-half Golden Eagle goals. Blue Demon junior midfielder Matt Brickman notched his first career goal in the first half when his well-placed cross was deflected into the back of the net.
On a sun-drenched Wish Field, the Golden Eagles were able to strike first when Lucas Sunesson scored in the ninth minute. Marquette controlled the pace of the match for the first 15 minutes but DePaul settled in and began to push forward as the first half progressed.
The Blue Demons were able to break through and find the back of the net in the 20th minute when Brickman whipped in a curling cross that deflected off of the head of a Marquette defender and past the Golden Eagle goalkeeper. Brickman's score was the first of his career and knotted the match at one. DePaul kept the pressure on until the halftime break as the Blue Demons totaled nine first-half shots and forced Marquette's Chandler Hallwood to make four first-half stops.
After halftime, the physicality of the match heightened as both teams attempted to break the tie. Both sides were whistled for more than ten second-half fouls. DePaul was called for a foul just outside of the 18-yard box in the 70th minute and Marquette was able to capitalize. Golden Eagle forward Beto Soto slotted the free kick past Drew Nuelle to give Marquette the lead.
Marquette would go on to add some insurance in the 84th minute when Sunesson scored his second goal of the match.
DePaul freshman Omar Ramadan posted a team-high two shots on net and created a handful of chances within the Blue Demon midfield. Redshirt freshman David Gripman added three shots.

DePaul heads to Cincinnati to take on Xavier on Wednesday, March 10 at noon CT. The Musketeers dropped their BIG EAST opener to Creighton, 1-2.
