DePaul closes out Cardinal Classic with rematch against Miami on Sunday
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – DePaul softball dropped an evening contest to Miami (Ohio), 5-1, on Saturday in game two of the Cardinal Classic.
The Blue Demons tallied three hits in the outing and earned seven total bases.
Miami (6-5) jumped on board in the second inning off of a solo shot to left center to take a 1-0 lead.
The third inning saw Pearl Barosso reach on an error and Angela Scalzitti single to second base, but Jessica Cothern could not bring them across.
The RedHawks added to their lead in the fifth inning behind consecutive walks and a 2 RBI double to left field to widen the lead to 3-0.
Maranda Gutierrez notched a leadoff base hit in the fifth for the Blue Demons but nothing materialized in the ensuing at bats.
Miami tallied a leadoff single of their own in the sixth before an RBI double pushed the advantage to 4-0. The seventh inning saw a solo shot by the RedHawks to widen the deicit to 5-0 for the Blue Demons.
Pearl Barroso put DePaul (5-6) on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a single through the right side to score Gutierrez.
Krista Dalgarn threw six innings before Tori Meyer pitched in relief in the seventh. Dalgarn threw four strikeouts on the evening.
DePaul will close out the Cardinal Classic with a matchup against the RedHawks on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Blue Demons will stop in Peoria, Ill. on their way home for a doubleheader with Bradley on Monday, March 8.
