Blue Demons tally just three hits as eight-game win streak is snapped
VILLANOVA, Pa. – DePaul softball fell 2-0 to Villanova in game one of a BIG EAST doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The setback ends an eight-game winning streak for the Blue Demons.
Angela Scalzitti, Skylor Hilger and Jessica Cothern each recorded hits on the afternoon as the Blue Demons saw their best scoring chances in the third and fifth inning but could not convert.
In the top of the third, Hilger knock in a leadoff single down the left field line before Scalzitti drew a walk. At the next at bat, Kate Polucha put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Cothern came to the plate and flew out to left field in an attempt to bring Hilger home from third, but the umpire ruled the runner left early for the third out of the inning.
The Wildcats got on the board first in the bottom of the third behind a Chloe Smith RBI single down the left field line to bring Paige Rauch across the plate.
DePaul (15-8, 6-1 BIG EAST) flirted with a scoring opportunity in the fifth inning but couldn't push a run across. Pearl Barroso drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a groundout off the bat of Hilger. Scalzitti reached second on a single to left center and Barroso rounded third before getting caught in a throw down scenario and eventually tagged out at third.
Villanova (18-9, 4-0 BIG EAST) threatened in the fifth as the leadoff batter reached third on a DePaul fielding error. The next Wildcats at bat saw Giampolo line out to center and Scalzitti make the throw to Cothern at home for the double play to keep Villanova from extending the lead.
The Wildcats eventually scored one more in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly with Julia DaCosta running home to take a 2-0 lead.
DePaul could not muster up a rally in the seventh inning with Riley Pool, Barroso and Hilger going down in order.
Krista Dalgarn threw a complete game including three strikeouts and fell to 9-2 on the season with the loss.
The two squads will face off for game two of the doubleheader from the Villanova Softball complex at approximately 1:15 p.m. CT.
