Borowiak won the women's 5000m by more than four seconds
CHICAGO – DePaul's Olivia Borowiak set a school record in the 5000m run at the Gibson Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. on Friday evening. Borowiak won the event and highlighted the first day of the two-day meet hosted by Indiana State.
Borowiak logged a time of 16:53.09 to win the event by more than four seconds. Borowiak broke Gloria Kuiken's record in the outdoor 5000m run that had stood since 1987. Her breakout track performance comes after a strong cross country campaign earlier this spring that saw her win the Eastern Illinois Spring Open and finish in the top-15 at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships.
"Olivia ran the best 5k of her career," said distance coach Derrick Peterson. "As her event coach, seeing her take down our 34 year-old school record makes me so proud. I'm proud to see the progress she continues to make and the Dream Big mentality shift she has made to be great."
On the men's side, Adam Nelson posted a second-place finish in the 200m dash, finishing with a time of 21.69. The mark was a new personal-best and was just six tenths of a second off of the winning time.
In the field events, DePaul's Rebecca Chouinard and Billie Martin both posted top-five finishes in the women's hammer throw. Chouinard's mark of 57.29m was good for third place and was a new personal best.
Through eight events that have been scored, DePaul sits in second place as a team behind Northern Iowa. Action begins tomorrow in Terre Haute at 10:30 a.m. CT with the women's long jump which features four Blue Demon entries.
