No. 1 seed DePaul blanks No. 4 Butler 5-0 in Sunday's semifinals
CAYCE, S.C. – Coach Matt Brothers and his DePaul men's tennis team are headed to the BIG EAST Championship finals after a stalwart performance on Sunday.
The No. 1-seeded Blue Demons blanked Butler 5-0 in the BIG EAST Semifinals and will face No. 2 St. John's in Monday's title match that will be shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network with first serve at 12 p.m..
They improved to 14-6 after winning their fifth in a row while Butler finished at 8-8.
This is the fourth time DePaul has advanced to the BIG EAST title match, having reached the finals in 2009, 2014 and 2018.
It could be quite a memorable Monday as the DePaul women's team won its semifinal match earlier on Sunday and take on Xavier for a BIG EAST title at 8 a.m.
The last time one school won both the men's and women's tennis titles was Notre Dame in 2013.
No doubt tomorrow you'll see coach Marisa Arce's team and the "Band of Brothers" wildly cheering for one another at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
The men's matinee began with Vito Tonejc and Luuk Wassenaar beating Alvaro Huete Vadillo and Drew Michael 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Fran Tonejc and Tripp Tuff wrapped up the doubles point after defeating Borja Miralles and Zach Trimpe 6-3 at No. 3. That extended their winning streak to four in a row.
Wassenaar opened the singles sweep with a 7-6, 6-1 decision over Miralles in the No. 5 position---his fourth-straight victory.
Tuff's 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Filip Tensing at No. 6 put his team on the brink of match point with his fifth win in a row.
No. 1 singles player Vito Tonejc delivered the finishing touch with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Butler's best, Tom Brennan.
Boris Spanjaard won his fifth consecutive match after prevailing 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 over Drew Michael at No. 3 singles.
