DePaul wins sixth in a row, finishes BIG EAST regular season 13-1

INDIANAPOLIS – DePaul softball picked up the series sweep over Butler with a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Demons extended their win streak to six games and closed out the BIG EAST regular season 13-1 for the best conference finish for the program since going 18-1 in 2014.

DePaul (22-9, 13-1 BIG EAST) put up 11 hits on the afternoon with Brooke Johnson, Tori Meyer and Maranda Gutierrez recording two apiece. Meyer, Gutierrez and Jessica Cothern each tallied an RBI.

Natalie Halvorson threw five innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits to improve to 9-3 in the circle. Halvorson is a perfect 7-0 in BIG EAST play with a 1.89 ERA. Krista Dalgarn earned her second save of the season in two innings of work.

DePaul took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Tori Meyer sent a double to left center and Maranda Gutierrez plated her with an RBI single.

The Blue Demons widened their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Johnson tallied a leadoff single before Nicole Sullivan singled to left field to put runners on first and second. Runners advanced on a wild pitch before Tori Meyer knocked in an RBI single to score Johnson and put DePaul in front 2-0.

The Bulldogs plated one in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on first and third, Bri Avery forced a run down between Skylor Hilger at second and Johnson at first which allowed the run from third to score after an interference call on Johnson.

The top of the seventh inning saw DePaul add an insurance run with Angela Scalzitti sending a single through left field and stealing second on the ensuing at bat. Kate Polucha singled to shortstop and pushed Scalzitti to third. Jessica Cothern kept the offense going with an RBI single to center field to bring Scalzitti home and widen the Blue Demons advantage to 3-1.

Dalgarn retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the series sweep for the Blue Demons.

DePaul will wrap up its regular season May 7-8 with a trio of games at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons will face off against UIC on Friday at 2:30 p.m. before meeting the Flames again on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. DePaul will wrap up the weekend with a game against Western Illinois at 1 p.m.

The Blue Demons have clinched a spot in the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament hosted in Storrs, Conn. May 13-15.
