Tonejc, Jakic advance to consolation quarterfinals at Milwaukee Tennis Classic
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Blue Demons were spread a little thin this weekend at the Purdue Fall Invite with two of their top players competing in the prestigious Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
In the morning session at Purdue, DePaul came away with a pair of wins in a series of singles matches against Ball State that finished up just ahead of the Notre Dame-Purdue kickoff at Ross-Ade Stadium.
Tripp Tuff picked up his second win of weekend after prevailing over Danilo Kovacevic 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. Also emerging victorious was freshman Matteo Iaquinto with a 2-6, 7-6 (0-3), 6-4 decision over Eli Herran. Iaquinto also has two wins on this trip as he and Tuff teamed up to win a doubles match on Friday.
In the afternoon session, coach Matt Brothers' team split six singles matches. The victories came courtesy of Lars Peder Minsaas easing past Purdue's Gabriele Brancatelli 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman Sven Moser from Bern, Switzerland won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(2) over Noah Viste of IUPUI. It was his first collegiate win. Phasu Sirinit followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Canaan Sellers of IUPUI.
Nationally ranked Vito Tonejc and freshman teammate Marino Jakic opened play Saturday at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic where entrants qualify according to ratings.
In a baseball town where pennant fever is running rampant with the beloved Brewers, the morning in Milwaukee began with Tonejc and Jakic falling 7-5 in doubles to the Harvard duo of Ronan Jachuck and Brian Shi.
Jakic moved onto his opening singles assignment where the native of Split, Croatia lost 6-3, 6-3 to Maxence Bertimon of Virginia Commonwealth. In his consolation match, Jakic picked up a big win over Notre Dame's Connor Fu 6-3, 6-4. Jakic's first collegiate win sends him into Sunday's consolation quarterfinals.
Tonejc ran into some tough competition in the form of Oklahoma's Mark Mandlik and dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision. In the backdraw match, the ITA preseason No. 97 Tonejc defeated Leonard Soha of Wisconsin 6-4, 6-3. He joins his teammate Jakic in Sunday's consolation quarterfinals.
