Blue Demons can't sustain early lead in first road match of dual season
EAST LANSING, Mich. – A promising beginning did not translate into overall success Sunday for the DePaul women's tennis team.
The Blue Demons (1-3) could not build on an early lead in a 5-2 setback to Michigan State.
The day started out going DePaul's way. After losing at No. 2 doubles, the Blue Demons swept the final two matches to take a 1-0 lead.
No. 1 doubles team Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva topped Mary Lewis and Maja Pietrowicz 7-5 to even the tandem competition.
In a clutch performance, Hristina Djokic and Marija Jovicic came through with a 7-5 decision over Charlotte Gisclon and Marlo Schiffman to secure the first point in their first road match.
Coach Marisa Arce's team could not capitalize on the early momentum. Michigan State got on the scoreboard with a win at No. 4 singles and moved in front 2-1 after claiming the point at No. 3 singles.
But No. 1 singles standout Kizelbasheva swept Lewis in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to even the match score at 2-2.
The Spartans (2-1) retaliated with victories at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the match.
The Blue Demons are back home Saturday to take on Cincinnati at XS Tennis Village on the South Side.
