Blue Demons looking to snap a three-match skid in DeKalb
CHICAGO – Coach Marisa Arce and her DePaul women's tennis team would love to follow the lead of No. 1 singles player Yuliya Kizelbasheva on Sunday when they venture out to DeKalb, Ill. for a 1 p.m. match against Northern Illinois.
The sophomore from Russia was honored as the BIG EAST Women's Singles Player of the Week two weeks ago after starting out the dual-match season 3-0. DePaul's match last week against Cincinnati was canceled because of a winter snowstorm in Ohio.
Kizelbasheva is riding a five-match winning streak which dates back to last fall's tournament season. She is 10-7 overall.
Freshman Eleanor Nobbs is making an immediate impact starting out her NCAA career going 9-7 in singles, splitting time between the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.
In doubles, the No. 1 combination of Lenka Antonijevic and Kizelbasheva are 11-5 on the season including a sparkling 9-4 mark in the tournament season.
Hristina Djokic has returned after a long injury absence to team with Marija Jovicic for a 2-1 record. The plan is for Djokic to work her way back and eventually play singles again.
NIU is off to a 3-2 start including 3-1 on its home courts. The Huskies have two common opponents with DePaul (1-3)---Wisconsin beat NIU 7-0 and the Blue Demons 6-1 and both programs beat Bradley by identical 4-0 scores.
The Huskies followed the Wisconsin loss with home wins over Bradley, Western Illinois and St. Thomas. Their lone road encounter was a 5-2 setback at Notre Dame.
Reagan Welch has won three in a row for NIU and is 3-1 on the season.
