Men's Tennis Completes Day One of Midwest Regional Qualifiers

DePaul Men's Tennis complete the first day of competition at Illinois
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – DePaul Men's Tennis competed in day one of the ITA Midwest Regional qualifying round on Thursday. Six out of eight members of the team participated in the 64 rounds of singles matches against 18 other schools in the region. Out of the six, Leon Huck and Shourya Verma will advance to the third and final round of qualifiers for a chance to compete with Aleksa Krivokapic and Marino Jakic in the main draw.
In the first round of matches, Sven Moser played Adam Kovac from Toledo. The two players battled it out to three sets, but Kovac came out on top, winning 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1.
Matteo Iaquinto fell to Christopher Norlin from Northern Illinois, 7-5, 6-2.
Huck defeated a player from Cleveland State 6-1, 6-4, to move on to the second set of qualifiers.
Jona Gitschel dropped his first match of the day against Marquette's Rami Scheetz 6-4, 6-3.
Lars Minsaas fell to Nathan Favier from Youngstown State in a hard fought three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Lastly, Shourya Verma conquered Christopher Knutson from Northern Illinois 7-6 (1), 6-1, to join Huck in the second round of qualifiers.
In the next round of 32 qualifiers, Huck faced off against Marquette's Thomas Nelson and won in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(5).
Verma defeated David Alvarez Moreno from Youngstown State 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the third and final round of qualifiers.
Tomorrow, day two of the ITA Midwest Regionals continues with the first round of doubles main draw at 8 a.m. CT.
