Women’s soccer drops game against Friars
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul women's soccer was held off by the Providence Friars 2-1 on Thursday night. The Friars took an early lead after completing a goal in the first 45. Providence continued to push DePaul's backline and made another connection in the 56th minute. The Blue Demons were able to respond in the last six minutes of the game but fell short of an equalizer before the 90thminute.
The Friars took charge of the field in the first half. Goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson was tested during the early onslaught as Providence fired 6 shots before the end of the first half. Eriksson held her ground and saved three out of the Friars' four shots on goal. In the 30th minute, Providence pushed past DePaul into the attacking third to record their first goal of the match. Ellie Mink and Lina Dantes both put up shots, but the Blue Demons could not connect, ending the half at 1-0.
Providence continued to attack in the second, scoring another goal in the 56th minute to extend their lead to 2-0. DePaul turned up the pressure and focused their efforts on offense. Senior forward Kristin Boos put up two shots, including one off an indirect free kick in 71stminute. Midfielder Beth Smyth and forward Katie Godden also made attempts at the net but fell short. The two teams continued to go back and forth until Godden found the back of the net off a cross by Ebba Costow in the 88th minute. The Blue Demons landed on the board, but the Friars came out on top in the end with a 2-1 win.
