Fifth accolade for Blue Demon power forward in last 24 hours
CHICAGO – After pulling down 27 rebounds, it's no wonder Aneesah Morrow is attracting attention nationwide.
The latest honor came Tuesday morning courtesy of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) who honored the 6-foot, 1-inch power forward as the National Freshman of the Week.
It's the second time Morrow has won the award, and according to USBWA Vice-President Mel Greenberg, she is the only repeat winner.
On Monday, Morrow became the first player in BIG EAST history to sweep the Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards three times. She was also highlighted on ESPNU's televised announcement of the John Wooden Player of the Year Award late season watch list.
ESPN writer Michelle Voepel hailed her as the national player of the week in her column. With the USBWA honor, that comes to five accolades in 24 hours.
Morrow built an overwhelming resume last week while playing three games in five days.
It began with 30 points and 14 rebounds against No. 10/9 Connecticut---becoming only the fourth opposing player to post 30 points and double-digit rebounds against the vaunted Huskies.
The other three---Candace Parker (Tennessee), Angel McCoughtry (Louisville) and Jackie Young (Notre Dame)---were all the first player picked in the WNBA Draft.
Morrow followed up with 22 points and 18 boards against St. John's and 22 points and 27 rebounds at Seton Hall. That comes to an eye-popping 24.7 points and 19.7 rebounds in a 2-1 week for DePaul (18-5, 10-2).
The 27 rebounds is the most in any NCAA game this season, easily surpassing the previous high of 23. It also set an all-time BIG EAST record previously held by UConn's Peggy Walsh in 1986.
In addition, it was the best rebounding performance since California's Kristine Anigwe had 30 against Washington State on March 3, 2019.
As the Blue Demons head into the stretch run of the BIG EAST season with eight games remaining, Morrow is elevating her performance. She has scored 139 points and hauled in 89 rebounds in her last five games---an average of 27.8 points and 17.8 rebounds.
The former Simeon All-Stater leads the nation in rebounds, double-doubles, rebounding average and offensive rebounds per game. She is second in field goals and third in scoring.
