Blue Demons Take Down Western Michigan 4-3

Halvorson ties career-high with 10 strikeouts
ROSEMONT, Ill. — A Nicole Sullivan RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference in a 4-3 win for DePaul over Western Michigan on Friday evening.Â
Seven different Blue Demons tallied a hit while Kate Polucha recorded a pair of RBI's in the victory at the Rosemont Dome. Natalie Halvorson pitched the complete-game winner and tied her career-high with 10 strikeouts on the outing.Â
The Blue Demons jumped out to an early lead much like the season opener, with Maranda Gutierrez and Grace Frazier reaching base after consecutive singles up the middle in the first inning. Anna Wohlers drew to load the bases for Polucha. The left-fielder smacked a deep fly-ball into center and brought home Gutierrez and Frazier with the sacrifice.Â
DePaul (2-0) expanded its lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI-double to center from Wohlers. The freshman plated Brook Johnson from first in the first hit of her career.
Western Michigan (1-2) jumped on the board in the third inning after a pair of hits put runners on first and third for Brendtke to slap the ball back to Halvorson and squeeze the run home from third. The Broncos went on to tie the ball game 3-3 in the top of the sixth on a base hit to short to bring home a pair of runners in scoring position.Â
The deciding run came in the bottom of the sixth after Polucha cracked a hit to center field and Sullivan singled on the ensuing at bat to plate Polucha from second and give DePaul a 4-3 lead.Â
Halvorson retired the side in the top of the seventh to put DePaul in the win column.Â
The Blue Demons will close out opening weekend at the 2022 DePaul Dome tournament on Saturday with a pair of games. The Blue Demons will meet St. Thomas at 2:30 p.m. before facing Murray State at 7:30.Â
