Late Runs Power DePaul Past St. Thomas 8-3

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Despite being stifled early offensively, DePaul put up a combined eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take down St. Thomas 8-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore infielder Nicole Sullivan totaled five RBI on two hits while Sarah Lehman threw a career-high 11 strikeouts en route to her second win of the season.

The Blue Demons jumped on the board with four runs in the fifth inning and never relinquished the lead. Skylor Hilger took a base to lead off before Kate Polucha doubled to center field to plate Hilger. Brooke Johnson drew a walk and passed the bate to Nicole Sullivan for a single to right field to score Polucha. On the next at bat, Anna Wohlers singled to load the bases. Grace Frazier drove home two more runs on a single to shortstop.

St. Thomas (2-2) responded in the top of the fifth with a three-run homer to left to trim the DePaul advantage to one.

DePaul ( 3-0) wasn't done putting runs on the board as the Blue Demons added four more in the bottom of the sixth. Hilger, Gutierrez and Johnson reached base to set up a Sullivan grand slam to center to add some much needed insurance with DePaul in front 8-3.

Lehman retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

The Blue Demons close out opening weekend on Saturday evening against Murray State. First pitch is set to get underway at 7:30 p.m.
