DePaul in all-out win mode during final 15 days of conference season
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Welcome to BIG EAST basketball crunch time.
Right here not far from where President Joe Biden sets up operations in this huge White House and where the famous Washington Monument is a 1.5-mile walk from the Blue Demons' hotel, DePaul finds itself in practically a must-win scenario.
Coach Doug Bruno's team, red-hot Villanova (eight wins in a row including UConn), Creighton and Marquette are engaged in a heated fight for conference tournament seeding and beyond.
No matter that its opponent on Super Bowl Sunday Georgetown is 7-14 overall and 2-11 in BIG EAST play.
Take nothing for granted when you're in a predicament with pretty much no margin for error.
There are huge games coming up against Marquette, Villanova and Creighton in the next two weeks, but those are for another story at another time.
For now, it's simply win and move on. Almost sounds like March Madness, doesn't it?
When the opening tip arrives at 1 p.m. Central Time at McDonough Arena, watch for senior point guard and floor leader Lexi Held to perform like a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection.
Watch for Deja Church to continue her steady play of late while Darrione Rogers and Kierra Collier make some key contributions.
And last but certainly not least, keep a close eye on No. 24 in the visiting blue uniform. The Blue Demons need their dynamic All-American candidate and ESPN's Freshman of the Year front-runner Aneesah Morrow to impose her will on opponents.
Her numbers are amazing. She leads the nation in double-doubles, total rebounds, rebounds per game and offensive rebounds per game. Morrow is second in field goals, third in total points and sixth in steals.
In the conference-only stats used to determine postseason awards, Morrow is averaging 22.7 points and 14.8 rebounds a game.
In 15 BIG EAST games, she has 14 double-doubles.
A fresh look at Morrow's breakout season comes from Her Hoop Stats, delighting stat geeks and metric maniacs alike.
Most of us are familiar with the WAR rating (Wins Above Replacement) that is a staple within Major League Baseball.
Well, Megan Gauer of the Her Hoop Stats website and View From the Top women's basketball newsletter writes about a rough WAR equivalent she calls Win Share.
"Win Share is a stat that uses box score data to approximate how many wins a player has contributed," Gauer tweeted. "It takes into account a lot of a player's stats. So while certainly not perfect, it's one of the better ways to look at a player's overall impact in one number."
Aliya Boston of No. 1-ranked South Carolina tops the Win Share rating with a 10.6 score. Right behind her is Kansas State's Ayoka Lee at 9.6.
Third place is occupied by mega-scorer Caitlin Clark of No. 25/24 Iowa who put up 46 points in a loss to No. 4/4 Michigan that included a trio of three-pointers from 30-35 feet. The splendid sophomore averaging 27.6 points has a rating of 9.4. Her Big Ten rival Veronica Burton of Northwestern is next at 8.7.
In fifth place is our favorite South Sider who is doing her alma mater Simeon proud. Morrow clocks in with a Win Share of 8.3.
Morrow & Co. remain No. 1 in the nation in scoring offense and assists. They are third in rebounds and fourth in three-pointers.
Georgetown is coming off a 79-45 loss Friday at St. John's, and the Hoyas have dropped 10 of their last 11 games.
