Blue Demons split day one of Torero Classic
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Despite leading in the third and fifth innings, the Blue Demons could not stave off a trio of three-run innings from San Diego in a 9-5 setback on Friday night.Â
DePaul tallied just five hits in the contest in contrast to its 11 against Iowa.Â
Kate Polucha put the Blue Demons on the board in the top of the third inning with an RBI single to left field to score Addison Talbot. Riley Pool set the table for the run with a leadoff double in the inning before Talbot stepped in to run for the catcher.Â
The Torero's answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on three hits to take the lead.Â
DePaul reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a trio of runs. Pool reached on a walk and was pushed across on a Gutierrez triple down the right field line. Johnson tallied her third home run of the day to put DePaul in front 4-3.Â
San Diego responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to pull in front 6-4. The first two batters singled and advanced on a wild pitch before both were brought home on a single to right center. Halvorson entered the circle with the bases loaded and allowed one run and stranded two runners.Â
In need of an answer, Pool and Baylee Cosgrove reached base in the top of the sixth before Polucha hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.Â
A walk and a pair of singles from the Torero's loaded the bases before a single up the middle pushed the San Diego advantage to 8-4. The ensuing at bat saw another run score as the deficit for the Blue Demons climbed to five.Â
In an effort for a late rally, Johnson and Nicole Sullivan drew walks before advancing a base on a Tori Meyer single to load the bases. Anna Wohlers reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners while scoring Johnson and cut the San Diego lead to four. No more runs would cross as the Torero's would take the 9-5 victory.
Sarah Lehman fell to 2-1 in the circle with the loss.Â
DePaul will return to action at the Torero Classic on Saturday with a matchup against Oregon State at 11 a.m. (CT) and the weekend finale against South Dakota State at 1:30. Â
