WBCA's 10-member All-America Team will be announced March 31
CHICAGO – Aneesah Morrow has cleared the final hurdle in potentially being selected for her fifth All-American team.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced finalists Thursday for its All-America team, and the DePaul National Freshman of the Year was prominent among the 14 players from Region 4 voted on by coaches.
The WBCA selection committee will choose the 10-member Coaches' All-America Team from the 52 national finalists, and the 2022 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Team will be announced Thursday, March 31.
Leading candidates alongside Morrow in Region 4 included the nation's leading scorer Caitlin Clark of Iowa, Naz Hillmon (Michigan), Maddy Siegrist (Villanova), Christyn Williams (Connecticut), Veronica Burton (Northwestern) and Taylor Mikesell (Ohio State).
Prominent among the national finalists are Player of the Year frontrunner Aliyah Boston of No. 1-ranked South Carolina, Rhyne Howard (Kentucky), NaLyssa Smith (Baylor), Ashley Joens (Iowa State), Elissa Cunane (North Carolina State) and Ayoka Lee (Kansas State) along with Stanford's Haley Jones and Cameron Brink.
Morrow has been named All-American Second Team by the Associated Press, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), Sports Illustrated and The Athletic---which also honored her as the National Freshman of the Year.
The 6-foot, 1-inch power forward has taken Blue Demon Nation on an exhilarating thrill ride this season from day one when she scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds during her NCAA debut against Texas Southern.
That's the most points scored in a rookie debut during Hall of Fame coach Doug Bruno's illustrious 36-year career.
That was only the beginning.
The first OMG moment occurred on Jan. 30 before an FS1 national TV audience when Morrow scored 22 points and hauled down an amazing 27 rebounds---breaking the BIG EAST single-game record and establishing an NCAA season high.
The second one came Feb. 27 in the regular-season finale at Creighton---once again in front of an FS1 national TV audience---when DePaul's No. 24 went off for a career-high 41 points along with 18 rebounds.
This time, Morrow shattered the BIG EAST freshman scoring record and came within one point (Beth Hasenmiller, 1991) of equaling DePaul's all-time, single-game scoring record.
For someone who wasn't listed among the nation's top 100 recruits last year, the former Simeon All-Stater has taken the NCAA women's basketball world by storm and soared to the top.
She leads the nation in double-doubles, rebounds, rebounds per game and offensive rebounds per game. She is third in the country in field goals heading up the NCAA's No. 1 offense averaging 88.3 points a game and is No. 6 in points and No. 8 in steals.
Morrow is a national finalist for two of the most prestigious awards in women's college basketball---the John Wooden Player of the Year and the Naismith Trophy Player of the Year. She was a top 10 finalist for Naismith Defensive Player of the Year.
The unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection and unanimous BIG EAST Freshman of the Year broke 11 conference records including most rebounds in a game (27 at Seton Hall) and most rebounds in a season (BIG EAST games). Her 41 points at Creighton set a new freshman standard.
She made history as the first player ever to win five USBWA National Freshman of Week awards and the first to win 13 BIG EAST Freshman of the Week awards. The previous USBWA standard of four was held by the country's top two sophomores---Connecticut's Paige Bueckers and Iowa's Clark.
Morrow's streak of 23 consecutive double-doubles that was snapped at the BIG EAST tournament leaves her in very exclusive company as only four other players in NCAA history have had 20-straight or more in one season.
The relentless rebounder said that being overlooked and watching Top 25 schools lose interest while she battled through a series of injuries had her playing with a considerable chip on her broad shoulder.
And don't think for a minute this freshman phenom let up even one bit off the court. Getting after her schoolwork with the same intensity she attacked the glass, Morrow finished with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average after the fall quarter.
