Illinois State's Early Outburst Too Much for DePaul

Blue Demons drop midweek matchup with the Redbirds
CHICAGO — A six-run first inning for Illinois State was too big of a deficit to climb for DePaul in a 9-4 setback on Tuesday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium.
DePaul (17-19, 6-6 BIG EAST) started slow out of the gates, falling behind 6-0 in the first inning after surrendering six walks, three hits and committing a fielding error. The Blue Demons responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first to pull within a pair of runs, but could not come any closer.
Junior first baseman Brooke Johnson went three-for-four on the day with a double and a pair of base hits while Anna Wohlers was two-for-three while driving in pair of runs. Nicole Sullivan and Baylee Cosgrove recorded an RBI apiece.
In the circle, Julyana Gomez fell to 0-2 on the spring campaign after facing four batters and surrendering four walks. Erin Hocker threw four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits before Sarah Lehman one-hit the Redbirds in three innings of work.
Tuesday marked the 40th meeting between the two programs with DePaul now narrowly holding the all-time advantage 20-19-1. Illinois State (17-18, 7-4 Missouri Valley) has gotten the best of the Blue Demons in consecutive years.
The Blue Demons return to Cacciatore Stadium on Friday for a doubleheader with BIG EAST foe St. John's with start time for game one scheduled for 12 p.m. CT. The series finale is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with action aired on CBS Sports Network.
