Blue Demons 10-game BIG EAST winning streak snapped
OMAHA, Neb. — For the first time since April 1, the Blue Demons dropped a BIG EAST contest after an 11-6 setback at the hands of Creighton on Saturday afternoon.
In a back-and-forth game full of offense, the Bluejays struck first and last as the 11 runs given up were the most in a conference game this season for the Blue Demons. Five different batters tallied an RBI for DePaul while Tori Meyer and Carly Alvers had multi-hit outings.
Erin Hocker went three innings in the circle, surrendering six hits and six runs before Julyana Gomez went three innings in relief allowing a combined five hits and five runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Creighton took a two-run lead after the first inning on a leadoff single followed by a homer to right field from Kailey Wilson.
DePaul scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Alvers sent a leadoff-base hit up the middle before back-to-back walks from Gutierrez and Hilger loaded the bases. Johnson drew her third walk of the series to push Alvers home before Wohlers lifted a sacrifice to right field to score Gutierrez. Hilger ran home as Johnson was caught up in a run down between first and second.
The Bluejays responded with four runs in the bottom half to claim a 6-3 lead. Wilson hit her second two-run home run of the game before a base hit, walk and fly out put runners in scoring position for a two-RBI single from Saren Croker to right field.
Alvers sent a double to center field in the top of the fourth inning before being brought home on a Gutierrez RBI-single to cut the deficit to 6-4.
In the top of the fifth, the Blue Demons totaled four hits and scored a pair of runs to tie the game at 6-6. Wohlers lifted a double to right center before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Polucha sent a RBI-single through the right side to plate Wohlers and bring DePaul within one. Tori Meyer sent a dribbling double through the right side of the infield to put runners in scoring position for Cosgrove who singled through the left side and pushed Polucha across to tie the game.
The Bluejays took the lead again in the bottom half of the frame as a leadoff walk came around to score on an RBI-single to right field. The home squad added four runs in the bottom of the seventh to widen the advantage on four runs on four hits.
Down to three outs, Meyer sent a single up the middle but that would be it for the Blue Demons in the seventh.
The two teams will meet for the series finale on Sunday with first pitch from Creighton Sports Complex scheduled for 12 p.m.
