DePaul No. 10 in Final ITA Midwest Rankings

Vito Tonejc No. 16 in singles, No. 10 in doubles with Marino Jakic
CHICAGO – The overall success of two-time BIG EAST champion DePaul was reflected Friday in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's final regional rankings.
In the Midwest Region that is fronted by national power No. 5 Ohio State, the Blue Demons finished the dual season ranked No. 10.
Along with the Buckeyes, the Midwest Region featured five other ITA nationally ranked teams including No. 8 Michigan, No. 31 Northwestern, No. 38 Notre Dame, No. 50 Illinois and No. 64 Wisconsin.
Two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year Vito Tonejc capped off a splendid final season ranked No. 16 in singles in the Midwest.
He combined with BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Marino Jakic to finish No. 10 in the final Midwest Region doubles rankings.
Tonejc was dominant at his No. 1 singles position throughout the dual-match season after winning his first 10 matches and posting a 20-3 record.
The native of Zagreb, Croatia went 28-9 overall and 7-0 against BIG EAST competition including the postseason. He defeated two nationally ranked singles opponents and took down Kentucky's No. 36-ranked doubles team and Northwestern's No. 56 tandem. As a team, Kentucky was the NCAA runner-up.
He is a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection who led coach Matt Brothers' program to its first two NCAA tournament appearances in program history. Tonejc was named BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week a league-high four times and was honored as DePaul's Male Athlete of the Year.
Jakic was an All-BIG EAST Second Team choice and honored as the BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player after leading the "Band of Brothers" to a 4-2 victory over St. John's in the BIG EAST title match.
The first-year standout from Split, Croatia teamed with Tonejc for a 17-13 doubles record including 12-9 in the dual season. The also won a BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week award.
Earlier in the week, the Blue Demons brought home more hardware after winning the ITA Community Service Award for the fourth year in a row.
