Blue Demons and Falcons held scoreless at Wish Field
CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer fought to a 0-0 tie against No. 25 Bowling Green (0-0-1) in the 2022 season opener on Friday. The Blue Demons (0-0-1) defense had a strong showing, anchored by Matthew Brickman and Grant Herbek, who helped to keep away the Bowling Green offense.
"It was a positive result for our guys," said head coach Mark Plotkin. "Bowling Green is a great team, there's a reason they were ranked so high in preseason. I'm happy at the way we competed and felt a 0-0 draw was a fair result. Credit to our back line and goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz for staying strong and coming up big when we needed them. We'll focus on recovery and prep for a tough Bucknell team on Sunday."
The Blue Demons started offensive action early, getting two shots up within the first 20 minutes of the match. The attempts by Kristian Malinich and Omar Ramadan were both grabbed for saves. Following the shots, DePaul had a great defensive performance. The Blue Demons faced seven Falcon shots, and Cruz had one save through the first period, keeping the score at halftime 0-0.
After the break, Will Stroud had a strong shot from the left side of the box. The shot was blocked and Michael Anderson used the ricochet for his own attempt which was saved by Bowling Green. Five minutes later, Stroud powered another shot but provided no score.
Meanwhile, the Blue Demons defense held strong against the Bowling Green offensive attack that totaled 17 shots. Cruz totaled 6 saves through the whole game. The Blue Demon backline cleared a handful of dangerous attempts to keep the score 0-0 until the final whistle.
