CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer (1-0-1) earned their first win of the 2022 season against Bucknell (0-2) in the Sunday afternoon matchup at Wish Field in Chicago. The Blue Demons offense got going behind two first half goals and a strong defensive showing.
"I'm happy with our performance today," said head coach Mark Plotkin. "Going Friday-Sunday to start the year isn't easy and I thought our guys managed the weekend extremely well. Today we were able to execute in the final third and continue to be sharp on the defensive end. It's a great start to the year, we'll enjoy this and start preparation for Oakland on Thursday."
The Blue Demons offensive attack started early with a shot in the 4th minute by Marek Gonda. Gonda eventually found the back of the net in the 21st minute, scoring the first goal of the season. Cade Hagan picked up an assist. Jake Fuderer followed up with a second goal off of a penalty kick in the 30th minute.
The Blue Demons defense played a big part in the afternoon showcase, allowing only six total shots from the Bison. Only one shot ended up on target, with goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz getting the save. In the last minutes, DePaul's defense fended off an offensive attack from the Bison and maintained the shutout.
The Blue Demons have not allowed a goal through two matches in the 2022 season.
