DePaul falls to Marquette in Conference Opener

The Blue Demons trail the Golden Eagles 3-2
CHICAGO – On Thursday afternoon DePaul women's soccer was held off by Marquette 3-2 after tying in the first half. The Golden Eagles pushed past the draw in the 55th minute after a penalty kick goal. Seven minutes later, Marquette broke the back line, increasing their lead. Forward Kristin Boos responded with a successful penalty kick goal for DePaul, but the Blue Demons could not generate another connection before the end of the game.Â

DePaul kicked off to start the match at Wish Field. Marquette immediately took control on offense, putting up five shots within the 15th minute. Boos finally secured the ball and passed it to Katie Godden who scored on the teams very first shot of the game. The Blue Demons gained the lead and continued to play aggressively. Defenders Sydney Parker and Grace Phillpotts refused to let Marquette past the back line. DePaul managed to stay ahead until the 29th minute when Marquette scored off a corner kick to tie the game. Neither team was able to break the draw until the second half.Â

After the first 45, Marquette stepped up their offensive, putting up three shots within the first 5 minutes. A DePaul foul in the 55th minute resulted in a penalty kick for the Golden Eagles. Marquette seized the opportunity and scored to pull a head. The Blue Demons tried to regain control of the board but another Marquette connection in the 62nd minute secured a 2-point lead for the Golden Eagles. In the 80th minute a Marquette foul resulted in a penalty kick for the Blue Demons. Boos stepped up to the challenged and nailed a perfect shot into the corner of the net. The penalty goal left DePaul trailing Marquette by one point. The Blue Demons just needed to find an equalizer. DePaul was not able to respond, but the team fought hard until the end of the game.Â
