Blue Demons and Fighting Irish tie at one apiece
CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer (2-0-2) fought to their second draw of the 2022 season against No. 22 Notre Dame (1-1-1) in a Tuesday night matchup at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind. The Blue Demons were unable to find the back of the net for a second time after many promising attempts.
"Our guys should be very proud of their performance tonight," said head coach Mark Plotkin. "They were organized, disciplined, and played with a great deal of confidence on the road to a team that was in the final four last year. We'll keep growing as a team and know we need to be ready at Loyola on Friday."
The Blue Demons got off to a strong start with Gandhi Cruz earning a save within the first minute of play. In the seventh minute, Cade Hagan took the first shot for DePaul but the ball went wide to the right. The DePaul defense worked hard to keep the Fighting Irish offense away from the box while Cruz ended the first half with two saves on three shots from Notre Dame.
The Blue Demons and Fighting Irish were scoreless at half.
The second half started out strong with Jacob Huth scoring his first goal of the 2022 season in the 48th minute. In the 63rd minute, Will Stroud made a great defensive play on a ricochet shot which helped the Blue Demons to hold on to their 1-0.
The Fighting Irish were awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute, but the shot went off the left goalpost. After continuous attempts all night, Notre Dame tied up the match in the 82nd minute when they scored the first goal against Cruz in the 2022 season.
DePaul used the last five minutes of the match to try and regain the lead. Both Gonda and Huth had strong attempts, but both went wide to the right.
Notre Dame had a last minute attempt to get their first lead of the game, but Cruz and the Blue Demons defense were able to keep the Fighting Irish away from the back of the net and get the final draw. Gandhi Cruz ended the game with four saves on 16 shots.
