Mullins nets a brace, Hernandez tallies three points
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Despite netting three first-half goals, DePaul men's soccer was forced to settle for a 3-3 draw with Marquette on Wednesday night at Valley Fields.
The Blue Demons took command of the match from the onset and found a trio of chances and capitalized on them as Noeh Hernandez buried a penalty kick and fellow freshman Liam Mullins followed suit with a pair of goals. Marquette went on to score three unanswered to limit the Blue Demons to one point.
Goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz matched his season-high with 9 saves for the second-consecutive match. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Blue Demons 25-3.
How it Happened
The Blue Demons had a pair of free kick opportunities in the early going, but it was Marquette that fired the first three shots of the match.
It wasn't long before DePaul opened the scoring as Hernandez was converted on the penalty in the 11th minute after being brought down in the box while driving to goal. The goal was the third of the season for the freshman and first in BIG EAST play.
DePaul (2-7-3, 0-4-2 BIG EAST) earned their first corner of the game in the 19th minute and capitalized on the chance as Hernandez provided service across the box for Ethan Gordon to head the ball on for Mullins to bury it in the back of the net.
Just two minutes later, Christian Baumgartner dispossessed a Marquette winger in the midfield and sent a beauty of a ball through to Mullins who drew out the Golden Eagles keeper and chipped the ball to the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Marquette (7-5-2, 1-4-1) got a goal back right before halftime, firing from the top of the box to make it 3-1 heading into the intermission.
The Golden Eagles controlled the pace for the final 45, breaking through in the 56th minute on a goal deflected off a Blue Demon defender.
MU found the equalizer in the 77th minute on a free kick just outside the box. The final 10 minutes saw the Golden Eagles fire four shots and earn four corner kicks, but Cruz and the defense hung on to preserve the tie.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will return home for their final two matches of the regular season beginning with a matchup against Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 21. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with coverage on FloFC.
