The Blue Demons close out their 2023 season
QUEENS – DePaul women's soccer was held off by St. John's, 1-0 on Thursday night. A late goal in the second half by the Red Storm pushed St. John's ahead of DePaul and in the end, gave them the win.
At the start of the match, DePaul (6-7-4, 2-5-3 BIG EAST) generated some offensive opportunities against the Red Storm. Ellie Mink, Beth Smyth, and Susie Soderstrom proved to be great threats against the St. John's defense, laying on the pressure and creating shots. The Blue Demons looked to strike first, but no connections were made and both teams went into the second half scoreless.
In the second 45 minutes, the Red Storm (10-5-3, 5-4-1 BIG EAST) amped up their offensive pressure. DePaul goalkeeper Elena Milam recorded back-to-back saves in incredible fashion in the 51st minute, before St. John's broke through in the 56th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Demons continued their fighting efforts from the first half, looking for an opportunity to respond. However, DePaul was not able to convert before the whistle blew at the end of 90 minutes.
Head coach Michele O'Brien and her squad close out the 2023 campaign 6-7-4 overall and 2-5-3 in BIG EAST play, doubling their win total from a season ago while posting nine points in league action, up from four in 2022.
