DePaul wins third straight
CHICAGO – The DePaul women's tennis team picked up it's first ranked win of the season, with a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 40 Iowa Tuesday afternoon.Â
The Blue Demons secured the victory when Lenka Antonijevic defeated Iowa's Barbora Pokorna with a tie breaker in the third set on the No. 4 singles court.Â
DePaul went down 1-0 early after losing the doubles point, before battling back to win four of the six singles matchups. Greta Carbone grabbed the first singles win for DePaul, defeating Iowa's Kranholdt, 6-3, 6-0. Eleanor Nobbs earned the second point for the Blue Demons with a win against Vipasha Mehra, 7-5, 6-2.
Yuliya Kizelbasheva, Hannah Smith and Lenka Antonijevic all took their matchups to three sets. Kizelbasheva earned the third point, bouncing back after dropping the first set to win the second and third, 6-2. Antonijevic clinched the win for the Blue Demons also winning her last two sets, 6-4, 7-5.
This was DePaul's first ranked matchup of the 2023 dual season and first since March 22, 2021 against then-No. 46 Kansas State. The 4-3 decision is the first ranked win for DePaul women's tennis since the 2017 season against Auburn.
UP NEXT: DePaul hits the road for a two-match trip against Omaha and Creighton. The Blue Demons will take on Omaha on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m before a BIG EAST matchup Sunday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m.
