Riley Pool drives in four runs as Blue Demons open weekend with 9-5 win

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Despite falling behind by a pair of runs after three innings, the Blue Demons put up a combined nine runs in the final two frames to take down Southern Illinois Edwardsville (SIUE) 9-5 on Friday night to kickoff the Coach B Classic.

Riley Pool led the late rally on a two-for-three day with a two-run homer and two-RBI single to drive home four runs. Tori Meyer and Baylee Cosgrove each tallied two RBIs while Addison Talbot lifted a sac fly to center to bring a run across.

Senior pitcher Brenna Smith went four innings in relief allowing three runs and notching a pair of strikeouts to pick up the win and move to 2-1 on the season.

How it Happened

The Cougars were the aggressors early on, totaling seven hits through the first three innings and getting on the board with four base-knocks and a pair of runs in the third.

Anna Wohlers broke the silence for the Blue Demons, reaching base with a leadoff double in the fifth and advancing to third on a ground out. Talbot plated Wohlers on a sacrifice to put DePaul on the board before Cosgrove jumped aboard after a hit by pitch. With two gone, Riley Pool took a home run to left center to give the Blue Demons a 3-2 lead. Alvers sent a double to left center before Meyer went yard for a two-run shot and a 5-2 DePaul advantage.

The sixth inning saw DePaul's first two batters reach base on a Brooke Johnson base hit up the middle and Wohlers 11-pitch walk. The runners advanced on a fly out before Talbot drew a walk to load the bases. Cosgrove drove in a pair on a double down the left field line before Pool cleared the bases with a two-RBI single and send the Blue Demons into the seventh in front 9-2.

SIUE did not go away quietly with five hits and three more runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as DePaul held on to claim their fifth win of the season.
