Blue Demons muster just five combined hits in two games
CARBONDALE, Ill. – It was a quiet day for the DePaul bats as the Blue Demons mustered a combined five hits in a pair of setbacks at the Coach B Classic.
Â
In the first game of the day DePaul (5-7) saw just three batters reach base in an 8-0 decision against SIUE while coming back later in the evening and falling 2-1 to Southern Illinois.
Â
Against the Cougars, it was the defensive errors that were costly as a pair of Blue Demon errors in the first inning created an early three-run deficit before the second inning saw a third miscue make way for another SIUE run, putting DePaul behind 4-0. Anna Wohlers was responsible for the lone hit of the contest with a double down the right field line in the top of the fourth. The Cougars went on to add three more runs to close out the victory.
Â
In the circle, Abbey Pochie went four innings allowing seven runs on seven hits before Bella Nigey entered in relief and threw an inning and a third surrendering a hit and a run.
Â
In game two, it was an unearned run in the second inning for the Salukis that was the difference in a low scoring affair. In the bottom of the second, a Southern Illinois one-out bunt stole second before advancing to third on a ground out and crossing home on a Blue Demons error behind the plate to take an early 1-0 advantage.
Â
DePaul knotted the score in the top of the fifth on a two-out rally with Grace Frazier reaching on a Salukis error followed by a five-pitch walk drawn by Brooke Johnson and Frazier eventually crossing on a Wohlers RBI-single. Â
Â
Southern Illinois recorded the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth as a leadoff double advanced to third on a passed ball and came home on a RBI single to center field to secure the lead once again.
Â
Brenna Smith threw the complete game against the Salukis, making way for just one earned run on three hits and one walk. Â
