Blue Demon forward one of 15 finalists for National Player of the Year
Los Angeles, Calif. – DePaul women's basketball forward Aneesah Morrow added to her already impressive list of accolades on Saturday after being selected as one of 15 players placed on the national ballot for the John R. Wooden Award.
Morrow, a finalist for the National Player of the Year award for the second-straight year, had a standout sophomore campaign for the Blue Demons leading the way with 25.7 points per game to go with 12.2 rebounds while collecting 25 double-doubles in 33 games. Her scoring average ranks fourth nationally and her rebounds per game ranks sixth while her double-double tally is good for third.
With 848 points this season, Morrow broke the program's single season scoring record that was previously held by Diana Vines' 804 points in the 1988-89 season. Her season average is second all-time in program history while her 403 rebounds in 2022-23 trails only her own freshman season total of 457 boards.
A unanimous All-BIG EAST selection for the second-straight season, Morrow finished in double figures in all but one game this season while notching 28 outings of 20 or more points including eight performances of 30+ points.
The Chicago native has put up incredible numbers in just two seasons of collegiate basketball, ranking 19th in program history in scoring with 1,570 points. Morrow ranks eighth all-time in rebounds with 860 and in blocks with 102.
In addition to the Wooden Award National Ballot, the sophomore is a top-five finalist for the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Award, a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, as well as a top-20 candidate for the Naismith and Wade trophies.
All balloted players have been certified by their university to meet or exceed the qualifications for the Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden when the Award was established. The qualifications include: candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court; candidates must be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university; candidates must be making progress toward graduation and have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their school; candidates must contribute to team effort; candidates must excel in both offense and defense; and candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season.
Voting will take place from March 14th to March 21st, and voters take into consideration a player's entire season of play, as well as the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The finalists for the 2023 Wooden Award presented by Wendy's will be announced on March 29th.
