Postseason implications on the line in final weekend of the regular season
WASHINGTON, D.C. – With pivotal postseason implications on the line, DePaul softball will head East to close out the 2023 regular season with a visit to Georgetown for a three-game BIG EAST series, May 5-7.
The two squads will open the series at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy on Friday at 2 p.m. (CT) while Saturday's matchup is slated for 1 p.m. and the weekend finale on tap for a 12 p.m. first pitch on Sunday. The Blue Demons will look to build off the momentum gained last weekend after handing the Connecticut Huskies their first series loss since 2021. DePaul (14-30, 6-15) claimed a pair of wins in thrilling fashion to put themselves in position to play for the postseason in the final weekend.
Sophomore Anna Wohlers has led the Blue Demons at the dish all season long, ranking first in almost every statistical category including average (.352), hits (45), RBIs (32), home runs (11) and slugging percentage (.719). Wohlers lifted DePaul to victory on Saturday over UConn with a walk-off RBI-double in the seventh inning to claim the series. Brooke Johnson has been a steady force for the offense, batting .323 with 22 RBIs, 11 extra-base hits, and a .412 on-base percentage.
Shortstop Nicole Sullivan has stepped up big in BIG EAST play, batting .350 and driving in 14 runs while stealing four bags and crossing the plate eight times.
Against UConn, Tori Meyer batted .333 with hits in crucial scenarios to drive in three runs and land on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
The Blue Demons have relied on all four pitchers on staff throughout the 2023 campaign with each hurling 50 or more innings in 18 or more appearances. Freshman Bella Nigey owns a staff-best ERA at 4.72 with a team-high 50 strikeouts in 78.2 innings of work. Senior right-hander has made 27 appearances and made 16 starts totaling 90 innings.
Scouting Georgetown
The Hoyas enter the final weekend of BIG EAST play with a 16-30 mark including a 9-12 record in league play. Last weekend, Georgetown dropped a pair to Butler on the road after taking the series opener in convincing fashion, 12-3.
Graduate students Cameron Kondo and Mae Forshey lead the charge at the plate for the Hoyas. Kondo holds a team-best .346 average on 45 hits including six doubles and 12 home runs while Forshey has driven in 25 runs on 16 extra-base hits.
In the circle, left-hander Brooke Plonka owns a staff-best 4.58 ERA while throwing 120 strikeouts in 108 innings of work. Junior Julia Parker has made 31 appearances and is 4-12 on the spring campaign.

The Blue Demons have commanded the series with the Hoyas, owning a 22-4 all-time record heading into the weekend. A season ago, the Blue Demons swept the weekend series in Chicago, outscoring the blue and grey 40-11 including a 17-0 shutout.
