The Blue Demons close out Cardinal & Gold Challenge
AMES, IOWA - DePaul volleyball fell, 3-0 (8-25, 15-25, 23-25), to Iowa State in the final match of the Cardinal & Gold Challenge on Sunday afternoon.Â
DePaul (0-2) was led by Jill Pressly who tallied nine kills and 11 digs followed by Audrey Klemp who added seven kills. Rachel Krasowski posted a team-high 18 digs while Katelynn Oxley entered the match in the third set and shifted momentum with four kills and one block.
"We grew up in many different ways in that match," said head coach Marie Zidek. "Iowa State makes you play volleyball. They manage exceptionally well and force you to bring an elevated game to them. It was nice to see what we could be starting to emerge in that third set after settling in the first two sets. We learned how to adjust and how to protect our game and grow within it. We are leaving this tournament hungry for what can be this season."
Iowa State's (2-0) Lilly Wachholz and Nayeli Gonzalez led the way for the Cyclones, totalling 11 kills each.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One: A 6-1 run for the Cyclones proved to be too much for the Blue Demons during early play.
Set Two: Early back-and-forth from either side of the net kept the match close. Klemp and Pressly tallied kills and a block from Kindelberger helped the Blue Demons stay within reach. After a DePaul timeout with the score 13-17, the Cyclones broke away with a 6-0 run to grab the set win.
Set Three: Kills from Pressly, Jones and Oxley gave DePaul the early 5-4 lead. Scholz and Jones partnered for a block to keep the Blue Demons' lead intact. Oxley helped shift the momentum with four kills throughout the set. Back-and-forth action kept both teams in close contention with one another. Despite back-to-back kills from Pressly to make it a one point set, 23-24, Iowa State's Wacholz claimed the match with a kill.Â
