Pressly paces offense with 14 kills
CHICAGO - DePaul volleyball defeated Loyola Chicago, 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 26-24), Friday night, in a thrilling matchup that featured 38 ties and 18 lead changes.
DePaul (6-4) was led by Jill Pressly who tallied 14 kills and added seven digs and three blocks. Audrey Klemp tallied nine kills and also added three blocks, two of which were solo blocks.
Freshman Meghan Scholz posted six blocks for the second straight game and poured in six kills on .600 hitting percent. Rachel Krasowski totaled 16 digs, with Maggie Jones adding 19 assists and 11 digs.
"Where to begin? Firstly, Loyola put on an amazing game atmosphere. Holy smokes," said head coach Marie Zidek. "What a fun volleyball event to be a part of for both teams. To see our players step up under that pressure and convert even though we were being out killed and had to play behind in the red zone, wow those are the moments a coach lives for - seeing the team play together in all phases and play for each other and welcome the moment to allow them to gear up. This team showed up to see this match through from start to finish and the more pressurized it got, the better they were and the sharper they played. Heck of a finish for this group that will pay us forward."
Loyola (2-8) was led by Bree Borum and Karlie McNabb who had 10 kills each. Borum also posted 30 assists and 10 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: The Blue Demons had an early 3-0 lead, thanks to two blocks from Pressly and Scholz. Both sides traded punches throughout much of the set, but a kill and block from Oxley put the Blue Demons up, 20-18. DePaul went on a 5-1 run, topped off by a set-winning service ace from Jones.
SET TWO: DePaul surged to a 4-1 lead behind kills from Scholz, Klemp and Krasowski. Scholz recorded her first career service ace and a kill by Jones gave the Blue Demons a 10-6 lead. The Ramblers responded with a 3-0 run of their own to take the slight advantage. However, three straight kills from Pressly helped put DePaul up, 22-20. Scholz and Oxley recorded kills, before the second solo block of the set from Klemp secured the set victory, 26-24.
SET THREE: A Ramblers error and Pressly kill put the Blue Demons up, 8-6. After trading points, a 3-1 Loyola run tied the match at 18. Klemp tallied her seventh kill of the match, providing the Blue Demons with a huge spark and a two point lead. Finishing the set on a three-straight points, the Blue Demons set up match point and Pressly hammered it home.
