Klemp and Jones set new career highs for kills on Saturday morning
BUFFALO, N.Y. - DePaul volleyball closed out the WNY Invite with a 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16) win over Montana, Saturday morning.Â
DePaul (2-3) was led by Audrey Klemp with 22 kills, a new career-high. Klemp owned a hitting percentage of .405 on the day. Rachel Krasowski tallied 30 digs throughout the match, with nine in both sets one and two.Â
Maggie Jones earned a new career-high in kills with seven, four of which came in the decisive fourth set. Jones also earned her 10th double-double of her career, totaling 30 assists and 10 digs. Jill Pressly had a double-double as well, securing 18 digs and 17 kills.Â
Sophomores Grace Brooker and Katelynn Oxley started for the Blue Demons today, recording four and five kills, respectively. Additionally, Ashley Cudiamat had 19 assists on the day.Â
"Really nice match to cap what has been a two week building phase for us," said head coach Marie Zidek. "We learned today what can happen if we bring point by point confidence, organization, and execution. Multiple people contributed in game changing roles. Our setters were able to spread the net and execute the offensive game plan. Our ball control fought to give them multiple options instead of just one decision and our serve held strong. Team effort here and we executed when we needed to in sets. Proud that this team has stuck to our path and to the training plan in order to see some delayed gratification for their efforts."
Montana was led by Maddie Kremer with 15 kills.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: Aly Kindelberger and Jones combined for a block to get the Blue Demons within one point early in the set. Back-and-forth action kept the set within two points for the majority of play, but a 4-1 run by the Grizzlies put them up, 17-13. Kills by Oxley, Pressly and Brooker tied the match at 18 all. DePaul grabbed its first lead behind a Montana error and kept the pressure up with kills from Klemp and two consecutive blocks by Oxley to grab the opening set win.
SET TWO: Kills from Kindelberger and a Montana error locked the set at 4-4. Oxley and Klemp helped the Blue Demons go on a 4-1 run tying the set, 10-10. A back-and-forth battle during the middle of the second set kept the team even beforeMontana pulled away on a 3-0 run to go up, 20-17. DePaul answered with their own 3-0 run knotting the score at 22 each. The Grizzlies won the set on an ace and Blue Demons error.
SET THREE: Two-straight Montana errors and Klemp's 11th kill of the morning put the Blue Demons up 13-9. Montana responded with a 5-0 run to take a 14-13 lead but the Blue Demons continued to answer. DePaul took a 20-17 lead with help from Pressly and Oxley's kills, causing a Montana timeout. The Blue Demons ended the set with a 3-1 run, highlighted by two kills from Klemp.
SET FOUR: An early 9-1 run for DePaul put the squad up 11-3 early in the fourth set. Jones had four kills during the Blue Demons run, on the way to her career high. Grace Brooker tallied her first ace of the season, putting DePaul up, 17-9, which led them to their second-consecutive win.Â
