Pressly and Klemp combined for 32 kills
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - DePaul volleyball defeated the Providence Friars, 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 22-25), Saturday afternoon.Â
Jill Pressly led DePaul (9-5, 2-1 BIG EAST) with 21 kills on .278 hitting percentage. Pressly added 10 digs for her 37th career double-double. The senior had eight kills in the first set and had totaled 18 through the first two sets of play.Â
Audrey Klemp and Bailey Nelson poured in 11 and nine kills, respectively. Sara Griffith made her first start of the season, totalling four kills and three blocks on the afternoon.Â
Senior Rachel Krasowski totaled 27 digs and added four assists and three service aces, which tied her career-high. Ashley Cudiamat had 41 assists, 12 digs and added an ace.
"Magnificent effort by our serve, block, and defense," said head coach Marie Zidek. "73 digs over 3 sets speaks to how stubborn we were to not let Providence score on us with their offense. And just when their defense started heating up and taking away kills from our offense, we found a way to win the nonstatted play. A great way to start the weekend for DePaul, and we look forward to building on this tomorrow."
Providence (6-9) was led by Shaliyah Rhoden with 11 kills.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: DePaul owned an 8-6 lead after a quick three-point surge thanks to kills from Pressly and Klemp. The Friars served up two consecutive aces and a kill to get within five but the Blue Demons were able to pull away with a Griffith kill, Krasowski ace and a Providence error to take the first set.Â
SET TWO: DePaul surged to a 5-1 lead, but the Friars evened the set at 7-7. Pressly recorded her 13th kill of the afternoon and Krasowski's third service ace put the Blue Demons up by four. Providence tied the match once again at 24-24 thanks to a 4-1 run, but a Friars error and Nelson termination secured the set victory.
SET THREE: Early back-and-forth action kept the set close, but the Blue Demons took a three point lead on Griffith's fourth kill of the match. Providence set off on a run of their own and gained their first lead of the set, 17-16. Kills from Klemp and Nelson followed by a Providence error put DePaul up by two, 19-17. The Friars went on a late 4-1 surge to get within two points but Pressly put the match away with her 21st kill of the afternoon.
