Pressly set new season-high in kills with 26
STORRS, CONN. - DePaul volleyball earned its third-straight win, Sunday afternoon, with a 3-2 victory over UConn (19-25, 29-27, 25-22, 17-25, 15-11). The match saw 43 ties and 21 lead changes.Â
DePaul (10-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) had three players record double digit kills. Jill Pressly totaled 26 kills, a new season-high and only one short of her career-high. Pressly added 20 digs, two aces and two blocks as well.
Bailey Nelson added 16 kills and two blocks while Audrey Klemp poured in 11 kills and six blocks, three of which were solo. Senior libero Rachel Krasowski tallied 32 digs, while Julia Nagy and Nora Mannion chipped in 13 and 12, respectively. Ashley Cudiamat recorded 53 assists and added one kill.
Aly Kindelberger and Meghan Scholz each earned a start in the Sunday matinee match. Kindelberger chipped in eight kills and four blocks while Scholz tallied a service ace and four blocks, two of which were solo blocks.
"Unbelievable blue grit from the entire group," said head coach Marie Zidek. "Our game did not come easy today and it took responding again and again to be the final one standing. Not only did we win ugly, but we had to come back down 4-8 in the fifth set. These types of wins become part of your DNA. Teams that play late in their seasons are able to push through a back and forth that's taxing and not easy. This team did that and everyone at some point had to make the play that counted. Super proud."
UConn (5-11, 0-4 BIG EAST) was led by Emma Werkmeister with 24 kills.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: An early 4-0 run put DePaul up 6-3. The Huskies responded with a surge of their own which included two straight service aces to take the lead, 14-11. A solo block by Klemp tied the match, but UConn took the set win on a 4-0 run.Â
SET TWO: Much back-and-forth between both sides kept the set close, as neither side led by more than two points. Kills from Pressly and Kindelberger put DePaul up by two, but UConn quickly responded with a service ace to tie, 14-14. A 3-0 run by DePaul, led by a solo block from Pressly and block assist from Pressly and Kindelberger gave the Blue Demons a 21-20 lead. DePaul concluded the set on a 3-0 run behind kills from Klemp and an ace from Scholz. The set saw 17 ties, six lead changes and five set points.
SET THREE: A kill and ace from Pressly helped put the Blue Demons up 7-4 early in the set. UConn responded with a four point run of their own, but two consecutive Nelson kills gave DePaul the slight advantage. Much back-and-forth ensued as the set saw 11 ties and seven lead changes, but Pressly hammered home her 19th kill for set point.
SET FOUR: Â A 6-1 surge by the hosting Huskies put them ahead, 10-5. The Blue Demons cut the lead to three behind a kill from Nelson and errors from UConn. Nelson stopped the second run by the Huskies with her 12th kill of the afternoon. Hanna Karl made her first appearance of the season and recorded a kill, cutting the UConn lead to six. The Huskies won the set with a kill and a block assist.
SET FIVE: Â A 4-0 run by the Blue Demons, powered by kills from Nelson, Pressly and Klemp as well as a solo block from Klemp tied the set at 8-8. DePaul concluded the match with a 7-2 run, as Nelson recorded a solo block and match point came off of a kill from Pressly.
