Klemp registers season-high 22 kills in win
WASHINGTON, D.C – DePaul volleyball defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 28-26, 22-25, 15-11) Friday evening, earning their second consecutive BIG EAST win. The Blue Demons improve to 12-5 and 4-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas fall to 8-9 overall, and 1-4 in conference play.
DePaul was sparked on offense by pin hitter Audrey Klemp, who tallied a season-high 22 kills to go along with four blocks. Outside hitter Jill Pressly added 16 kills and 20 digs, for her eighth career match with 20 or more digs, and her seventh double-double on the year.
Middle blocker Aly Kindelberger contributed a team-leading six blocks, and notched her fourth match in double-figure kills, tallying 11. Fellow middle blockers Meghan Scholz and Katelynn Oxley each poured in four blocks of their own.
Both setters, Ashley Cudiamat and Amanda Saeger, registered double-doubles. Saeger posted 31 assists and 15 digs, each career-highs for the freshman.
Libero Rachel Krasowski led the defensive effort for DePaul with 27 digs.
"What a resilient finish from our group," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"We knew Georgetown was more offensive this year, and they certainly showed it. At the end it came down to pure guts. We made some unbelievable plays there to turn just enough in the fifth set to put some pressure on them. It was pure guts, all glory tonight."
Georgetown was led by 16 kills from outside hitter Mary Grace Goyena.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: Set one opened with the teams trading points, including three early kills from both Klemp and Georgetown senior Giselle Williams. Neither side could amass more than a 2-0 run down the stretch, until DePaul earned the final three points to take the set, 25-23.
SET TWO: The Hoyas jumped out to a quick lead after a 6-0 run that included two service aces from freshman Dionna Mitchell. DePaul fought back with a late 6-0 run of their own, propelled by three consecutive errors from the Hoyas. The Blue Demons were able to pull within two, but the Hoyas took the set, 25-23 on an ace from libero Karis Park.
SET THREE: The teams swapped kills for six consecutive points early, but two 4-0 runs from the Hoyas put them ahead by six in the middle of the set. Two Blue Demon blocks along with two Kindelberger kills cut the Georgetown lead to one point. The sides were locked in a tight battle late, but three kills from Klemp and two from Pressly earned DePaul the hard fought victory, 28-26.
SET FOUR: Set four remained close early, but Georgetown went on a 5-0 run assisted by three DePaul errors. The Blue Demons fought their way back into the set after being down as many as nine, but a kill from outside hitter Grace Albaugh secured the set for the Hoyas, 25-22.
SET FIVE: Knotted through four points, the Hoyas earned three quick kills to go ahead 8-5 in the deciding set. Two Pressly kills and two Georgetown errors put the Blue Demons back ahead 10-8. From there, DePaul took control and won the set 15-11, concluded with a final Klemp kill.
