Noeh Hernandez scores sixth goal of the season in the setback
QUEENS, N.Y. – Three St. John's goals in the first 30 minutes of the match was too much for DePaul to overcome in a 4-1 decision at Belson Stadium on Saturday evening.
With the setback, DePaul moves to 5-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in BIG EAST play while St. John's improves to 5-5-2 and 3-1 in league action.
Sophomore midfielder Noeh Hernandez netted the lone DePaul goal in the setback, scoring his sixth of the season in the 30th minute to prevent the Blue Demons from being blanked on the scoresheet. Freshman midfielder Jayden Waski added his second assist of the campaign.
Goalkeeper Santiago Davila made six saves on the evening as the Red Storm outshot the Blue Demons 25-7 including a 10-3 advantage on shots on target.
How it Happened
Acting as the aggressors from kickoff, St. John's scored its first goal in the 11th minute with the ball worked down the right flank and across the box for Julian Jakopovic to beat the Blue Demon back line with a near post finish for an early 1-0 advantage.
Just a minute and 18 seconds later, the Red Storm doubled their lead as a ball sent in to the six-yard box from the far corner was touched to Tyler Morck in space who beat a diving Davila to make the score 2-0.
Keagan Pace earned a free kick opportunity for the Blue Demons in the 16th minute just outside the box, making way for the first offensive chances of the game. Hernandez's initial shot was blocked before Tyson Amoo-Mensah's rebound fired just wide.
The Johnnies made the score 3-0 on a give and go on the right side of the field in the 30th minute as Eric Danquah bested Davila one-on-one.
DePaul cut into the deficit in the 36th minute when Max Padua won a duel in the attacking third and sent it forward for Jayden who touched it to Hernandez who fired with his left boot from outside the box and snuck it between the post and the St. John's goalkeeper to make it 3-1. It was Hernandez's six goal of the season and Waski's second assist in 2024.
St. John's held a 16-4 edge in shots through the first 45 minutes including a 5-2 advantage on shots on target.
On DePaul's first corner of the match in the 49th minute, Hernandez served the ball into the box finding the head of George Wyatt that was turned away at the goal line be a St. John's defender to keep the score 3-1.
In the 78th minute, St. John's added another goal with Miguel Diaz dribbling on the end line and firing it far post to push the Red Storm advantage back to three goals, 4-1.
