Mannion earns career-high 17 digs in five-set thriller
Milwaukee, Wis. – DePaul volleyball fell to RV Marquette 2-3 (25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 23-25, 14-16) Friday evening. The Blue Demons now sit at 13-6 on the season, and 5-2 in the BIG EAST.
Jill Pressly led the Blue Demon offense, tallying 25 kills and 11 digs for her third consecutive match with 20 or more kills. Pin hitter Audrey Klemp poured in 11 kills and two blocks, and middle blocker Aly Kindelberger followed suit, with 11 kills and two blocks of her own. This evening marks the seventh match of the season that three Blue Demons have reached double-figure kills.
Sophomore Meghan Scholz posted a strong showing at the net, with five total blocks and seven kills, while libero Rachel Krasowski led the Blue Demon defense in digs, contributing 27. Defensive specialist Nora Mannion registered 17 digs of her own, a career-high for the sophomore.
Setter Ashley Cudiamat notched a season-high in assists with 38, adding 15 digs for her 21st career double-double. Fellow setter Amanda Saeger contributed 20 assists and 10 digs, her ninth double-double of the year.
"Incredible match," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"We were dialed in from point one and gave ourselves many opportunities to compete with a very good Marquette team. Our passers did a great job. It was the best I have ever seen us pass against one of the top serving teams in our league. We took on the challenge and almost had them. The loss stings, but we should be proud of the way we played."
The Golden Eagles were led by middle blocker Hattie Bray, who tallied a career-high 28 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: The Blue Demons jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, after kills from Yavuz and Klemp along with a Pressly service ace. Marquette kept the pressure on, but DePaul led the rest of the way, with four more kills from Pressly and three from junior Katelynn Oxley to seal the set for the Blue Demons, 25-20.
SET TWO
The sides traded the first six points of the set, until the Golden Eagles went on a brief 3-0 run to go up 5-3. DePaul fought back with two runs of their own, including three kills from Pressly and one from Kindelberger. The Blue Demons pushed to the end with two more kills each from Kindelberger, Klemp, and Scholz, earning the set, 25-20.
SET THREE
The Golden Eagles earned the first two points of set three after consecutive Blue Demon errors, but three Pressly kills kept DePaul close, down only one in the middle of the set. A 4-0 run from Marquette helped them pull in front, and three kills from outside hitter Aubrey Hamilton put the set away, 25-16 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
SET FOUR: The set was tied eight times before either squad reached ten points, but three Hamilton kills propelled the Golden Eagles to a 15-11 lead. DePaul again fought within one, but Marquette extended the margin to four at 15-19. Three service aces from Pressly brought it close at 24-23, but Aubrey Hamilton concluded the set win for Marquette, 25-23.
SET FIVE
The sides were knotted at three early, after two Pressly kills and one apiece for Marquette from Bray and outside hitter Jenna Reitsma. The middle of the set featured five more ties, but the Golden Eagles led 13-10 upon two more kills from Bray.
