DePaul to compete in first tournament as a team since early October
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis is set to make the trip to East Lansing, Mich. for the Spartan Invite, Friday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3 hosted at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
For the first time in four weeks the Scarlet and Blue will be back together as a collective unit to wrap up their fall schedule.
The tournament features a myriad of participants including Butler, DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Iowa, Northwestern, Ohio State, as well as the hosts Michigan State. All three days of play will begin at 8:00 a.m. CT.
Singles competition consists of a compass draw. Players are divided into five different groups with each group holding eight players. All 40 players begin in the "East" section and if someone were to lose, they will move to a different section of the tournament.
Junior Hannah Smith is slated to take on Nao Nishino (Ohio State) in group A at 8:00 a.m. CT on Friday.
In group B, senior Eleanor Nobbs matches up with Alessia Cau (Ohio State). First serve is scheduled simultaneously with group A.
Groups C through E feature two Blue Demons in each bracket pool. Toronto native, Eva Goncharov faces Natalie Stasny of the host Spartans in group C. This is the second time Goncharov and Stasny have met on the court this season, but the first singles battle. The duo of Goncharov and Nobbs defeated Stasny/Tsitavets in the 2024 Rocket Invitational on Sept. 28, 6-4. Sophomore Sasha Stula also competes in the group. The second-year Blue Demon looks to continue an impressive fall, totaling a 4-1 record across two tournaments. Stula meets Northwestern's Katya Shepard. All matches in group C begin at 9:30 a.m. CT.
The Scarlet and Blue position, a tandem of sophomores in Group D. Helin Alvarez squares off with Jessica Matthews (Iowa), while Roberta Sechi plays against the Buckeyes' Megan Basil. First serve is also scheduled for 9:30 a.m. CT.
DePaul faces three Ohio State players in the opening round of the tournament, the most versus any other opponent in the Spartan Invite.
Group E rounds out the singles brackets for the weekend. Freshman Isabella Gibson battles Sarah Fazlagic (Michigan State). Gibson finds herself in an identical situation to Goncharov. Both Gibson and Fazlagic faced one another in a doubles match during the Rocket Invitational. Gibson and Stula were victorious over Fazlagic/Brahmbhatt, winning 6-2. Group E matches collectively start at 11:00 a.m. CT.
In doubles play, there are four groups that each contain five teams. Every team in a group will play one another in a round robin format. The pairing of Stula and Smith represent the Blue Demons in group 1, while Goncharov and Nobbs showcase their talents in the second group. Sechi and Cochran look to compete in group 3 with Alvarez and Gibson participating in group 4. Doubles matches will not begin before 1:00 p.m. CT.
DePaul has found frequent success in doubles action throughout the fall with a 13-6 mark. During the Rocket Invitational, the Blue Demons amassed an 8-1 combined doubles record against all opponents. The duo of Goncharov and Nobbs are 3-0 heading into the weekend.
