Oxley posts season-high six blocks in win
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball defeated St John's 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-17) Sunday afternoon, earning their sixth straight-set victory of the year. The Blue Demons improve to 11-5 overall, and 3-1 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm fall to 2-2 in conference play, and 13-5 on the season.
The matinee match was characterized by strong presence at the net from DePaul, with junior Katelynn Oxley recording a season-high six blocks. Sophomore Meghan Scholz also matched her season-high of five blocks, in addition to six kills.
Graduate student Rachel Krasowski led the Blue Demon defense with 16 digs, while freshman Abby Cahill attained her second match in double-figure digs, posting 10.
Freshman Amanda Saeger reached her second consecutive double-double, notching 19 assists and 11 digs. Senior Ashley Cudiamat tacked on an additional 16 assists.
Outside hitter Jill Pressly extended her streak to 15 matches in double-figure kills, tallying 14 on the afternoon. Junior Aly Kindelberger totaled eight kills of her own along with four blocks, while pin hitter Audrey Klemp poured in seven additional kills.
"Great response from this group against a very strong St. John's squad," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"They are a team that started the year with key non-conference wins over teams like San Diego, the Final Four team from a couple years ago. We knew that Erin Jones was going to get hers, so we really keyed in on everyone else. Our serve held up well over the match, and our offense was able to score when we needed. A gritty match where we reached a new gear. It's great to get the weekend split."
St. John's was paced by ten kills and ten assists from junior Erin Jones.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: The two sides traded points early, until two service aces from outside hitter Giorgia Walther pushed the Red Storm ahead by five. DePaul rebounded with kills from Oxley and Kindelberger, tying the set at 15 after three consecutive Red Storm errors. Five different Blue Demons recorded kills during the last 12 points, earning the hard-fought set victory, 25-23.
SET TWO: The Red Storm opened with two quick kills from junior Lucrezia Lodi, but sophomore Yagmur Yavuz responded with a kill for DePaul. Two kills each from Kindelberger and Pressly pushed the Blue Demons in front by four, and the Red Storm never recovered, posting four more errors late in the set. DePaul took the set win, 25-18.
SET THREE: Four Blue Demon kills and a service ace from Saeger forced the Red Storm into an early timeout. St John's pulled within two, but proceeded to add three consecutive errors mid-set. A Klemp kill and another ace from Saeger extended the Blue Demon lead to seven. DePaul won the set 25-17, concluded by an ace from Cudiamat.
