Gibson Goes Unbeaten at Spartan Invite

The freshman tallies three singles wins on the weekend, capping off fall schedule
EAST LANSING, MICH. – The Blue Demons finished their fall schedule with singles matches at the Spartan Invite on Sunday, Nov. 3.
The contests opened at 8:00 a.m. CT at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. Junior Hannah Smith notched the first of two DePaul singles victories in a thriller against Iowa's Barbara Pokorna. Smith gained an early lead with a 6-4 advantage after set one. Dropping the second set, 3-6, resulted in a decisive, tiebreaking set. Smith came away with the victory after edging Pokorna, 7-6 (7-5).
A native of York, England, Isabella Gibson shined for the Blue Demons, ending fall competition on a positive note. Gibson won a close first set, 7-5 over Lara Diaz Zayas (Eastern Michigan). In set two, the Blue Demon freshman sputtered, losing 1-6. Gibson showed resilience, dominating the winner-take-all third set, 6-1. Gibson collected victories in all three singles matches throughout the weekend.
Sophomore Sasha Stula competed in the group C final at 9:30 a.m. CT. Stula took the early edge 6-2 versus the Spartans' Natalie Stasny after set one. Stula narrowly fell in set two 6-7 (5-7) and couldn't regain her footing, dropping the tiebreaker 3-6.
