DePaul Offense Stifled in Setback Against Princeton

CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball fell to Princeton 79-58 on Saturday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. Despite a five-point lead after the first quarter, the Blue Demons struggled to find the bottom of the net in the second and third quarters, posting a combined 19 points in the periods to allow the Tigers to widen their advantage and claim their first victory of the season.Â

Graduate forward Jorie Allen was the bright spot for the Blue Demons with a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds while shooting 64-percent from the field.

Freshman guard Ally Timm knocked in three triples and totaled a career-best nine points in 15 minutes of action while Meg Newman grabbed a game-high nine boards.Â

DePaul (1-1) dished out 19 assists on 21 made field goals for a 90-percent assist rate.Â

A lengthier Princeton squad held a 44-28 edge in the paint and out-rebounded the Blue Demons 35-31. Junior guard Madison St. Rose led all scorers with 24 points.Â

How it Happened
Four turnovers in the first four DePaul possessions allowed Princeton to take an early 4-0 lead before an Allen three-point play sparked a 7-0 run for the Blue Demons. Out of the media timeout, Smith found Walker for her second field goal of the quarter followed by four-straight points from the Tigers. Timm's first triple of the game handed the Blue Demons their largest lead of the quarter, forcing a Princeton timeout. Allen's midrange jumper as time expired put DePaul in front 19-14 after 10 minutes of play.Â

St. Rose hit two-straight shots for Princeton to open the second quarter with five-straight points. Timm continued her impact on both ends of the floor, knocking down her second three of the game before drawing a charge to keep DePaul's lead at five. The Blue Demons defense held strong, forcing three turnovers in three-straight Tiger possessions but couldn't capitalize offensively, with a near three-minute scoring drought of their own. With the score knotted at 26, McCline hit a 25-footer to keep momentum in DePaul's favor. Princeton took its first lead of the half with one minute left on the clock, scoring ten unanswered to go up 37-31 at the intermission.Â

The Blue Demons were held without a point for nearly four and a half minutes to begin the third quarter as Princeton stretched its lead to 12. A pair of Allen free throws broke the dry spell for DePaul. After a three-minute drought of their own, the Tigers posted an 11-0 scoring run, pushing the score to 54-35 with 2:14 left in the third. Princeton took a 58-38 edge into the final quarter. Â

Early in the fourth, DePaul had an 8-0 swing with baskets by Johnson-Matthews, Smith, and Allen. Princeton responded with three-straight field goals to cut DePaul's fourth quarter advantage. Both sides traded baskets in the final moments, with the Tigers claiming a 79-58 victory.
