Big 12-BIG EAST Battle sends DePaul to Lubbock
LUBBOCK, TEXAS – In a matchup of two teams receiving votes in the AP Poll, DePaul men's basketball travels to face Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The game is slated for an 8:15 p.m. tip from United Supermarkets Arena. James Westling and Tim Welsh have the television call on ESPNU, while Zach Zaidman and Dave Corzine have DePaul's radio broadcast. DePaul's radio broadcast can be heard on Sirius XM 382, 670 The Score and DePaul Blue Demons App.
LAST TIME OUT
DePaul (7-0) closed out its undefeated month of November with an 89-70 win last Friday against Valparaiso. The Blue Demons were led by 19 points from Isaiah Rivera, who earned BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades after shooting 7-of-10 from the floor with three three-pointers. As a team, the Blue Demons notched 23 assists on 32 made field goals. With the win, Chris Holtmann became the first DePaul coach to start 7-0 in their debut season since Ray Meyer in 1942-43.
SCOUTING DEPAUL
The Blue Demons have had balanced scoring efforts this season with nine different players averaging seven or more points per game. As a part of the scoring efforts, DePaul's bench is averaging over 38 points per game, a mark that ranks seventh nationally and leads all BIG EAST programs. Jacob Meyer and CJ Gunn are the leading scorers off the bench, averaging 14.7 and 10.0 points, respectively. Meyer enters Wednesdays game with a stretch of 22-consecutive games in double-digit scoring, dating back to last season.
Another large portion of the Blue Demons success has been the willingness to share the ball. DePaul is averaging 20.3 assists per game, a top-10 mark nationally, and is led by point guard Conor Enright who has a total of 50 assists this season. Another seven Blue Demons are averaging at least one assist per game as DePaul aides on over 66 percent of its made field goals.
THE SERIES
DePaul has won all three meetings between the two programs, including the latest in 2019 where the Blue Demons won a 65-60 overtime thriller at Wintrust Arena. Wednesday's game will mark the first all-time in the series played in Lubbock.
SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
Texas Tech (6-1) also boasts a very similar style as they average 18.1 assists per game and are shooting 42 percent from three-point range. The Red Raiders are coming off an 89-64 win over Northern Colorado last Friday where the team shot 13-of-23 from deep. Tech is 94-2 in non-conference home games since the start of the 2013-14 season, making United Supermarkets Arena one of the toughest places to play.
JT Toppin is the Red Raiders leading scorer, averaging a double-double with 18.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. His rebounds per game ranks top-10 in the nation in addition to him averaging 1.86 blocks per game. Darrion Williams also averages over 15 points per game for Texas Tech and boasts a 95.8 free throw percentage this season.
