
DePaul Drops Two on Friday

Brooke Johnson goes 3-for-3 against Kansas City
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - DePaul softball dropped two games to begin the Maverick Invitational on Friday, falling 8-0 to Michigan State and 10-7 to Kansas City.Â
Fifth year senior Brooke Johnson led DePaul (0-7), going 3-for-3 in game two against Kansas City. Johnson tallied her third home run of the season on top of a two-RBI double. Junior outfielder Addison Talbot also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 against the Roos.
Third baseman Carly Alvers and shortstop Bibianna Rodriguez tallied hits in both games of the day in addition to redshirt freshman Kali Blount making her DePaul debut as a pinch hitter against the Spartans.
Bella Nigey (0-3) started game one against Michigan State (2-5) going 3.1 innings where she gave up five runs on five hits, before she was relieved by freshman Lydia Ettema who went 1.2 innings. Brenna Smith started in the circle for game two, going four innings and giving up three hits. Katy Pierce (0-2) pitched 1.2 innings of relief against Kansas City (1-7).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME 1 - DePaul 0, Michigan State 8 (6 innings)
Michigan State scored early with a pair of home runs for a 3-0 lead after the second inning. Bibianna Rodriguez knocked a leadoff double in the third, but was unable to cross home. The Spartans rattled off two more home runs in the third and fourth innings for a 5-0 lead. Michigan State closed out the game with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
GAME 2 - Kansas City 10, DePaul 7
After a lead off walk from Gracie Jacobs, Talbot got DePaul's offense moving in the third with an RBI double to center, scoring Jacobs from third .
Kansas City scored four runs on two hits in the top of the fifth, for their first lead of the game. In the bottom of the frame, DePaul responded with a pair of hits by Cwick and Johnson. A sac fly by Riley Pool and RBI for Bailey Cosgrove evened the score, 4-4.Â
Kansas City quickly took back the lead with six runs over the sixth and seventh innings. Down 10-4, Johnson and Pool knocked a pair of seventh-inning homers, cutting the deficit to three. Despite a walk from Cosgrove, the Blue Demons couldn't bring any more runs around.Â
UP NEXT
DePaul continues the Maverick Invitational with two games on Saturday. First pitch against Boise State is set for 11:30 a.m. CT with the second matchup against Kansas City scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.Â
