Blue Demons pick up second-straight win

MEMPHIS, TENN. - Sophomore Bella Nigey threw a complete game shutout as DePaul softball secured its second-straight win in a 5-0 victory against Memphis, Sunday morning. It was Nigey's (2-4) second career shutout and first of the season as she struck out three with no walks, allowing six hits.

DePaul (3-11) was led offensively by redshirt freshman Kali Blount who went 3-for-3 at the plate, including two doubles and two RBIs. Bibianna Rodriguez also recorded two RBIs, while Carly Alvers added two runs, two hits and one RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Memphis (0-13) threatened first, notching two singles in the second inning but two quick outs ended the threat.

A four-run fifth inning was all DePaul needed for the go-ahead lead. Riley Pool leadoff the inning with a single up the middle. Baylee Cosgrove doubled to right field, giving the Blue Demons a pair of runners in scoring position. Alvers notched an RBI-single for the first run of the day, 1-0. Blount's first double of the day sent Cosgrove and Alvers home,extending the lead, 3-0. Rodriguez's ground out plated Blount to take a 4-0 lead.

With one out in the seventh, Alvers and Blount had back-to-back hits, putting runners at second at third. Rodriguez earned her second RBI of the game with another ground out, scoring Blount from third and pushing the lead to 5-0.

UP NEXT
DePaul rounds out the tournament portion of its schedule at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. on March 1-3. The Blue Demons will meet #14 Florida, #19 UCLA, #18 Texas A&M, San Jose State and Fresno State.
